Bourbon Aged Tequila: Sazerac Barrel Tequila Review

Corazon Tequila

Tortured Bourbon is taking a brief (but delicious) detour from Kentucky and diving into the world of tequila finished in Sazerac bourbon barrels. In honor of Mexico’s Revolution Day — November 20th, we explore how iconic bourbon DNA transforms three bottles of Corazón Reposado.

And yes… Katie’s back, Heather brought the history, and B brought the sarcasm.

This episode has everything: agave, bourbon spice, tequila science, and an international excuse to drink on camera.

🇲🇽 Why Revolution Day Matters

Heather kicks off with a quick, clear look at the significance of Día de la Revolución—the 1910 uprising led by Francisco I. Madero that reshaped Mexico’s political landscape and ultimately gave rise to the Constitution of 1917. A decade-long revolution, a national reboot, and a perfect excuse for us to explore Mexican spirits with a bourbon twist.

🥃 The Tequila Lineup: Corazón Reposado Finished in Sazerac Bourbon Barrels

1. Corazón Reposado – Aged in E.H. Taylor Barrels

  • Mash Bill: 100% Blue Weber agave

  • Aging: ~10 months

  • Barrel Influence: caramel, vanilla, oak, and a bold Taylor-style spice

  • Tasting Notes: caramel, vanilla, dried fruit, rounded sweet-spice finish

This one brings the closest “bourbon energy” of the lineup with its toffee-oak backbone and rich barrel character.

2. Corazón Reposado – Aged in Eagle Rare Barrels

  • Mash Bill: 100% Blue Weber agave

  • Aging: ~11 months

  • Barrel Influence: citrus, dried fruit, toasted oak, baking spices

  • Tasting Notes: cooked agave, butterscotch, caramel, and a warm, elegant finish

Eagle Rare always leans toward layered sweetness and aromatics, and that elegance shines through here.

3. Corazón Reposado – Aged in Weller CYPB Barrels

  • Mash Bill: 100% Blue Weber agave

  • Aging: 9 months in Weller CYPB wheated bourbon barrels

  • Barrel Influence: honey, brown sugar, soft wheat sweetness, gentle spice

  • Tasting Notes: citrus, vanilla bean, butterscotch, mint, toasted wood

This one is the softest, roundest, and sweetest—classic Weller influence with a tequila heartbeat.

🌶️ What Makes This Episode Unique

This tasting hits a rare crossover sweet spot:

tequila for bourbon lovers, and bourbon finishing for tequila fans.

Barrels from E.H. Taylor, Eagle Rare, and Weller CYPB impart wildly different flavor profiles, proving just how transformative Sazerac’s barrel DNA can be when paired with premium agave distillate.

We compare all three reposados, discuss which one offers the best blend of bourbon and agave expression, and decide which bottle truly shines on Revolution Day.
