While many bourbon drinkers immediately think Kentucky, Redwood Empire Whiskey has quietly become one of the fastest-rising names outside the Bluegrass State.
Based in Northern California, the company has earned a reputation for producing approachable, flavorful bourbons and ryes while celebrating the massive redwood forests that inspired the brand’s name and bottle artwork.
Their flagship Pipe Dream Bourbon has become a favorite for many whiskey enthusiasts looking for a rich everyday pour. Rather than simply releasing another finished whiskey, Redwood Empire took a far more creative approach with this limited release.
What Makes Pipe Dream Toasted Triple Finish Different?
Most toasted bourbons rely on one secondary barrel.
Pipe Dream takes that concept much further.
After aging, the bourbon is separately finished in:
French Oak Toasted Barrels
Hungarian Oak Toasted Barrels
Garryana Oak Toasted Barrels
Each barrel contributes different characteristics before the whiskey is blended together into the final product.
The idea is to build layers instead of simply adding more oak.

72% Corn
18% Rye
5% Wheat
5% Malted Barley
That mash bill already promises a balanced bourbon before the finishing barrels ever enter the equation.
The corn supplies sweetness.
The rye should provide baking spice.
A touch of wheat softens the profile.
The malted barley rounds everything together.
Then the toasted oak barrels are expected to layer in caramel, toasted marshmallow, roasted nuts, vanilla, crème brûlée, baking spices, and rich oak without becoming overly tannic.
That’s the theory.
Toasted Bourbon Isn’t Automatically Better
One of the biggest misconceptions in bourbon today is that “toasted” automatically means “premium.”
It doesn’t.
A toasted finish isn’t a guarantee of complexity any more than a higher proof guarantees a better whiskey.
We’ve tasted toasted bourbons that were absolutely incredible.
We’ve also tasted toasted bourbons that felt like someone dumped vanilla extract into an average bottle and doubled the price.
The finish has to enhance the bourbon—not hide it.
That’s why we’re always cautious whenever we see “toasted” printed across a label.
